Abstract

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of aromatherapy hand massage on anxiety and depression in patients with terminal cancer.
Methods: This study was nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were A twenty eight hospice patients for expeirmental group, B thirty of exprimental group, and twenty seven of control group which made all eighty five who were hospitalized in K university hospital hospice medical center located in D city. The period of date collection was from 1st May 2007 to 30th September 2007. As for experimental treatment, the experimental group A went through blended oil-a mixture of Bergamot, Lavender, Frankincense in the ratio of 1:1:1, which was tested on both hands with sweetarmond carrier oil 50§¢ for 5 minutes for 7 days. The experimental group B went through only sweetarmond carrier oil 50ml tested on both hands for 5 minutes for 7 days with general hand massage. The control group did not go through anything. The research tool was State Anxiety Inverntory by Spielberger(1975) and depression self reporting scale by Zung(1965).
Results: The collected data were done with SPSS WIN. Ver. 12.0 program, ¥ö2-test, one-way ANOVA. independent t-test, Scheffe test. The results are as followed: there were significant differences(F=131.44, p=0.000) on anxiety between groups and there were significant differences(F=224.12, p=0.000) on depression between groups.
Conclusion: Aromatherapy hand massage had a positive effect on patients with terminal cancer¡¯s on anxiety and depression.
